Facebook isn’t the first tech company to rebrand itself

Facebook, the world’s largest social media company, is considering changing its name.

According to The Verge, the new name is a “closely-guarded secret within its [Facebook’s] walls” to the extent that even the senior leadership of the company is not privy to the details. However, the report added, the name might be related to Horizon.

With that said, various questions emerge out of this development, with the foremost of them being the reason for the company’s decision to rebrand itself.

Facebook had its fair share of criticism for its policies and responsibility, and this could be a move to distance itself from the backlash that the company has attracted over the past few years.

The company, which started as a single social networking platform, now controls WhatsApp, Instagram, Oculus and other companies that serve as its subsidiary units. Facebook’s bid to rebrand itself could follow the path of companies like Google who were reorganized under newly-created parent companies. This approach could also help the company present itself as a diverse technology company since it is already planning to launch workspace collaboration tools and is delving into virtual reality.
