Modi’s Twitter compromised for the second time

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had his official Twitter handle “very briefly compromised,” according to a statement by the Indian PM’s office.

This is not the first time that Modi’s Twitter had been Twitter had been hacked. Back in September of 2020, a report by Reuters had stated that Modi’s personal website was hacked with a series of tweets asking its 73 million followers to donate to a relief fund through cryptocurrency. The hack had been confirmed by Twitter.

“We are actively investigating the situation. At this time, we are not aware of additional accounts being impacted,” a Twitter spokeswoman said in an emailed statement at the time.

Modi’s Twitter handle is not the only political account that has come under fire by hackers.

Earlier this month, Pakistan’s Embassy in Serbia reportedly had their account hacked as well. Two hours after the fact, the Foreign Office issued a statement in which it alleged that the social media accounts of the embassy had been hacked and that the messages being posted on those accounts were not made on behalf of any official authority.

In July 2020, hackers had accessed Twitter’s internal systems to hijack some of the platform’s top voices including United States presidential candidate Joe Biden, former US President Barack Obama, and tech billionaire Elon Musk, and used them to solicit digital currency.

Regarding the current hack, no information was provided by Modi’s office or by Twitter officials about how long the account had been compromised. Therein, the “brief period” which must be ignored remains unclear.
