Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa has expressed his disappointment and disillusionment with the fact-finding commission’s report on the 2017 Faizabad sit-in, terming it a “whitewash” that fails to hold anyone accountable for the violence and chaos that gripped the capital city.

The CJP’s remarks came during a hearing on Wednesday, where he questioned the commission’s findings and its failure to identify those responsible for the damage to public property and the loss of precious lives.

Justice Isa’s dissatisfaction with the report is a clear indication that the highest court in the land is not satisfied with the lack of transparency and accountability in the investigation. The fact that the report has been rejected by the CJP raises serious questions about the credibility of the commission and its findings.

The 2017 Faizabad sit-in, which was led by the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), had brought the capital city to a standstill, causing widespread disruption and chaos. The government’s handling of the situation was widely criticized, and the fact-finding commission was set up to investigate the incident and identify those responsible.

However, with the CJP’s rejection of the report, it seems that the quest for truth and accountability has been left unfulfilled. The people of Pakistan have a right to know who was behind the violence and chaos, and it is the responsibility of the state to ensure that justice is served
