Baby Shark crossed 10 billion views on YouTube last month

The 2-minute, 16-second YouTube video, which is the most viewed video on the platform, will be turned into a feature-length film, according to an announcement from Paramount Studios.

The original “Baby Shark” video became the first YouTube video to cross the 10 billion view mark last month, and it has already gotten a TV show spinoff (Baby Shark’s Big Show), in addition to the newly announced film.

The catchier-than-a-cold song surpassed Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito” as the most-watched video on the Alphabet-owned service back in November 2020, and has now raced ahead by more than 2.3 billion views.

The viral-earworm previously ventured into the theatrical space with the hour-long limited theatrical run of Pinkfong and Baby Shark’s Space Adventure, but this upcoming film appears to be a more traditional movie release.

The film will be co-produced by Pinkfong and Nickelodeon, though no other details have been made available at this time. While the catchy Doo-doo-doo of the song did get stuck in my children (and their parents’) heads, it’s hard to say how that would extend to a plotline.

The forthcoming Baby Shark film was confirmed on February 15 at the ViacomCBS Investors Event, along with the announcement of three new Spongebob Squarepants movies, animated Transformers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films, and more.
