Employees were evacuated from Apple Park due to unknown chemical powder

Workers at the Cupertino company’s headquarters faced a scare when an employee found an unknown white powder in the premises — which could have been asbestos — leading to a temporary evacuation from the building.

Apple Park is the corporate headquarters of Apple Inc., located in Cupertino, California, and was cleared out after a dangerous-seeming mail item was discovered by an employee. Employees were allowed to reenter their offices though when the substance was deemed not to be harmful, according to CNET.

Emergency personnel since have determined that the situation is under control, and employees apparently have been allowed to go back inside, according to the publication. It’s unclear what the substance may have been.

Apple told employees at Apple Park that “authorities concluded that there was no presence of hazardous materials,” according to an email obtained later in the day. The email says that operations at the campus are back to normal, and that “all sections are open.”

Apple and the local county fire department didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. After rescheduling return-to-office plans for its employees several times, Apple will start a “phased approach” to its hybrid work pilot in April.
